Introduction
In late November of 2009, I picked up a Sapphire 5850 graphics card for my new system rig. I am highly glad I did. It features Direct X 11 technology along with Gddr5 and 1gb of on board memory. It installed painlessly and worked from the first boot without any problems. Installing the most recent drivers from amd.com is a must to get the most out of this card. It may be approximately a year old but it is without fail the best bang for the buck for a dx11 card, authentically for any style graphics card on the store currently.
1gb
It's approximately 9.5" in distance and can fit in approximately any Mid Tower or Full Tower computer case. It takes up two lanes in the rear of the case and if you determine to put it in the top Pci-E 2.0 slot it will take up the slot right below it which is normally Pci.
This card was released in 2009 as the first Dx 11 card for the store along with its big brother the 5870. Ati got the ball rolling with this card for the next generation with Dx11 to beat Nvidia to the punch to filter the store in Ati's favor.
Test System
The rig in which this card was tested is as follows:
Processor: I7 920 Overclocked to 3.0ghz Ram: Corsair Xms3 Ddr 1600 (3 x 2 gb) Graphics: Sapphire Ati 5850 1Gb Dx11 Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 750Gb Secondary Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 1Tb
These are the primary opponents that are connected to the carrying out of this high end graphics card.
Performance
Games
I tested this card with many of the most beloved games which includes: Crysis, Counter attack Source, Mafia 2, Resident Evil 5. This card handled them all great with no stutter or lag in game play.
Crysis (1600 x 900, Max Settings with no Vertical Sync) Min Fps = 23, Max Fps = 98, Avg Fps = 65 Counter attack Source (1600 x 900, Max Settings with no Vertical Sync) Min Fps = 210, Max Fps = 300, Avg Fps = 254 Mafia 2 (1600 x 900, Max Settings with no Vertical Sync) Min Fps = 56, Max Fps = 120, Avg Fps = 85 Resident Evil 5 (1600 x 900, Max Settings with no Vertical Sync) Min Fps = 89, Max Fps = 187, Avg Fps = 136
This card performed beyond my expectations at all these games, the low rate during crysis is due to the fact that the game is overkill and doesn't need to be played on max setting to be enjoyed. However, it is nice to know that it is able to be played at max settings if needed.
Videos
The majority of people believe that any graphics card will be able to give you the best hd contact from online video and blue ray. This however is not the case. It's true that any of the nxt generation cards can play Hd content, but the Ati Sapphire 5850 plays it flawlessly with no lag or stutter. It can stream 1080P article from blue ray or online article no qoute at all and this is a big plus in having this card.
Cooling
I am not going to lie, the Ati 5850 line have some pretty load fans installed. The good news is that you can manually set the fan speed from the Ati catalyst panel, which comes in handy. If you are going to do intense gaming then the fan should be set at 70% or higher. While for normal usage, 40% will do the job. This card needs the large fan to keep the heat down on the card because the card can get hot at times under extreme usage, such as in games or watching 1080P video.
When finding at the temperatures, this card reaches at 70% fan level while playing a game the highest it has gotten to is 55 degrees Celsius. When comparing this climatic characteristic to other cards that are similar from Nvidia, they reach typically 80 degrees Celsius on the same fan setting.
Overall this card has a large fan to dissipate the heat the best it can and the rest depends on the case and all the ventilation that it has along with extra fans. It has one of the best cooling systems and keeps the climatic characteristic down to an standard state.
Over Clocking
To growth the output of this card you can use the Ati catalyst, which is part of your software that is automatically installed with the most recent driver. It has a standard core clock of 725mhz and an sufficient memory clock of 1000mhz. You can boost these to say 775mhz and 1100mhz memory clock and in doing so, you should also growth the fan setting also because it will put out more heat since you are working the card more.
By expanding the core clock and memory clock you growth the carrying out in your games. In counter attack source my median fps went up approximately 15fps and in Crysis it went up approximately 5 fps. It may not seem like much but in games that wish a lot, like Crysis, it is very beneficial.
You have to remember that holding your card over clocked and never changing it back to normal will cause it to use more electricity and stay hot. In the long run, I would recommend when your done gaming, changing it back to stock setting to get more life out of the card.
Conclusion
This is without fail a card that should be on top of your list. It's affordable, its high performing and it will fit in approximately any case without a problem. The game play capability by this card is astonishing, along with the next generation Dx11 support. As you saw it plays all the most recent and many games ready smoothly at max settings in Hd quality. It plays Full 1080P Hd article flawlessly from both blue ray and online content. It also has a state of the art air cooling system that won't break the bank and keeps the card cool in all situation and predicaments that you may put it through.
I would give this card a solid A for reliability, quality, and performance.
It can be bought at amazon.com for approximately 0 and is without fail a must have for 2010!!
